The Day After Tomorrow – $68.7M opening

10,000 B.C. – $33.14M opening (estimate)
The Patriot – $22.3M opening
The #2 spot for Friday and the weekend will go to Disney’s College Road Trip starring Martin Lawrence and Raven Symone, but it’s also a disappointment. The G-rated family comedy rode away with $3.5M on opening day, and even with a decent matinee bounce, it’ll likely get no higher than $12.5M for the 3-day.
Semi-Pro (New Line) is an unmitigated disaster. Despite all of Will Ferrell’s best efforts, the 70’s-style basketball comedy tumbled to $1.9M on its second Friday and a likely $6M weekend. That’s down 60% from opening weekend, and Semi-Pro’s 10-day cume will be only $25M or so.
The Bank Job (Lionsgate), a new release starring Jason Statham, finished #5 on Friday with an estimated $1.6M, but the heist thriller will probably be knocked down to 6th place for the weekend with about $4.7M. Meanwhile, Paramount’s The Spiderwick Chronicles, after a $1.12M Friday take, will get a huge weekend bounce for a #5 finish at just over $5M.
Focus Features rolled out Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day at 535 locations and scored an estimated $645,000 on Friday, a $1,200 per theatre average. The Amy Adams-Frances McDormand comedy is headed for a $2.35M weekend haul, just missing the Top 10.
Of the new specialty releases, Warner Independent’s Snow Angels has fared best with a Friday PTA of just over $2,000 at 2 locations. Sony Classics has 2 new limited releases in the mix. Married Life, starring Chris Cooper, Patricia Clarkson, Pierce Brosnan and Rachel McAdams, opened soft with an $1,165 Friday PTA at 9 locations. CJ7, a family film from Hong Kong, opened even softer with an average of $666 on 19 screens.
The Counterfeiters (Sony Classics), the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film, continues strong in its expansion. Now on 24 screens, it’ll win the weekend PTA battle with about $12,500. 10,000 B.C. will probably be #2 on the 3-day PTA scoreboard followed by Snow Angels, Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park (IFC Films) and Shadow Distribution’s Girls Rock.
