Patrick Swayze Has Died

Patrick Swayze Has Died By Devindra Hardawar/Sept. 14, 2009 5:46 pm EST Sad news to report tonight: Actor Patrick Swayze, famous for countless roles, has passed away at age 57. In March 2008 it was revealed that Swayze was suffering from pancreatic cancer, and today we’ve learned that he passed away peacefully while surrounded by family. Swayze was famous for his romantic roles (Dirty Dancing and Ghost, among others), but I’m more of a fan of his work in Red Dawn, Road House, and Point Break (though you could probably argue about the romantic aspect of that latter role)....

Shazam Is Dead

Shazam Is Dead By Peter Sciretta/Jan. 6, 2009 1:33 pm EST You won’t be seeing a big screen adaptation of Shazam hitting theaters anytime soon, as the project is now officially dead. Screenwriter John August has posted an in depth article on his blog explaining how the writer’s strike, New Line being merged into Warner Bros, and the back and fourth between various studio execs eventually killed the project. If you have a few minutes it’s well worth the read, and it’s very typical of the hilarity and frustration of the Hollywood studio system....

Spielberg’s Lincoln Not Dead; Robert Downey, Jr. A Possible Lead For Harvey By Russ Fischer/Sept. 15, 2009 10:00 am EST Here’s a novel approach to a potential film rivalry: view the other party as marketing for your own project. Steven Spielberg has wanted to make a biopic of Abraham Lincoln for quite some time, but various roadblocks have been put in the project’s path. The film, currently planned to be based on a script by Tony Kushner, would focus primarily on the Civil War, and Lincoln’s unhappy appraisal of the war’s effect....

The Possibly True Story Behind The Hangover

The Possibly True Story Behind The Hangover By Russ Fischer/June 9, 2009 10:17 pm EST After it took the top spot at the box office this weekend and enjoyed relatively good reviews to boot, everyone wants to talk about The Hangover. (The reviews are justified. We didn’t run one, for which I blame E3, but it’s a great comedy.) Some folks are persistently calling it a sleeper hit, which is absurd; as Jeff Wells points, out, it’s just a hit....

The Real 3D Battle Will Be Fought On Your Face

The Real 3D Battle Will Be Fought On Your Face By Russ Fischer/Dec. 30, 2009 1:03 pm EST For more than a year the 3D movie industry has been ramping up, but there was a broad perception that James Cameron’s Avatar could be the make or break movie for the tech. A massive flop might have set 3D adoption back slightly while success could be a shot in the arm for the theatre-only display technology....

Up In The Air Full Theatrical Trailer

Up In The Air Full Theatrical Trailer By Russ Fischer/Oct. 1, 2009 7:03 pm EST I have not seen Jason Reitman’s new film Up in the Air. I know it is getting raves left and right; it went over like gangbusters at Telluride (Peter’s review) and Toronto. Each bit of footage we’ve been given has shaped my understanding of the film, and each clip makes me a bit more interested to see what is really inside what Reitman has called perhaps the most personal film he’ll ever make....
